Abstract

MPEG-II standard provides the compression technique and synchronization mechanism for these applications such as Video-on-Demand. It provides the industry with a baseline principle to follow in order to reduce the hardware cost and improve interoperability. In this work, we design and implement the MPEG-II multiplexer and demultiplexer for CATV systems to provide the VoD service and other private data services. The multiplexer is in charge of multiplexing several MPEG-II programs and private data streams into a single transport stream. On the other hand, the demultiplexer is in charge of extracting the stream needed by the individual user. A prototype system demonstrates programs being multiplexed at the server, transmitted over Ethernet, and demultiplexed at the client site. In the last part of this work, we focus on the design of transport protocol in the CATV system. We design the private data protocol and signaling protocols which will be used to transport data services within MPEG-II streams.
