----------------------------------
MARKVISION FOR WINDOWS 95 OVERVIEW
----------------------------------

MarkVision for Windows 95 is a brand new MarkVision! MarkVision for Windows
3.1 first appeared in April of 1994. MarkVision for OS/2 Warp first appeared
in September of 1995. Now Lexmark introduces MarkVision for Windows 95.
Lexmark has taken the best of MarkVision's unprecedented printer management
and status capabilities to the next level for both users and network
administrators. Based on customer feedback, major improvements in the
user interface and function have been included in this latest version of
MarkVision for Windows 95. Some of the major enhancements are:

1) A main MarkVision Printer window that shows much more information than the
Windows 3.1 version. It is also very configurable offering several view
modes, and columns that you can sort and eliminate (in the details view).

2) Multiple printer windows so that you don't have to keep all your network
printers all in one printer window. You can open multiple printer windows
and have some printers in one window and other printers in another. You
can create as many printer windows as you need. You can manually setup
these printer windows, or apply filters to a window and let MarkVision
select which printers go in which printer window based on the filter you
define. Be sure to check out this new MarkVision feature out! We think you
   will find it very useful.

3) A graphical status view of multiple printers. Remember how you could only
see the graphical status view of only one printer at a time in Windows 3.1.
Now you can open as many views as it is reasonable to see on your
particular screen. You can then minimize them all and create an icon on the
Taskbar for each printer. You can configure the icon to change or
automatically open when an error occurs.

4) The ability to handle more than one network protocol. If you are running
more than one network protocol on your Windows 95 workstation, use
MarkVision to manage your parallel attached peer-to-peer printers too. This
allows you to view and control a printer that is connected to a peer
workstation from your workstation using MarkVision!

5) The new "Events" history pull down in the Status View allows you to see the
history of all the error conditions that the printer has encountered.

6) The new "Features" view inside the Status View. This view replaces Options
Markers and Details View in the Windows 3.1 MarkVision. You can see all
this information and more from a single location.

7) The familiar Remote Operator Panel, Job Statistics, and Resource Management
   views too!

8) If you are a network administrator, integration of the Windows 3.1 Network
Printer Utility Functions are all here. Each individual Printer or adapter
icon in the main view has its own individual Network Settings and Adapter
Settings Views that are integrated with the other popular views. You can
control how the network is searched for printers by using the Configure
pull down in the main MarkVision printer window.

--------------------
INSTALLATION METHODS
--------------------

There are several ways to install either printer drivers, MarkVision or both.
All methods start with DISK 1. Online help is available from Lexmark's SETUP
utility. Be sure to use this to further explain the SETUP utility's options.
There are three main methods of starting the installation process:

Method 1) Place DISK 1 in drive A:, and select START then RUN then A:\SETUP

        - Select Express or Custom or Server installation.

        - Select Express for a local workstation only installation, or
          Peer-to-Peer installation.

        - Select Custom if your printer is connected directly to the network
by means of a Lexmark Network Adapter.

        - Select Server if you are the network administrator and want to
install copies of MarkVision and the printer drivers on a shared
network drive for subsequent workstation installations. After Server
installation is complete, workstations on the network can run
F:\MARKVIS\SETUP to configure the workstation using one of these
          methods:
          - Install a local workstation copy of the drivers and
            MarkVision
          - Configure the workstation to run MarkVision from the shared drive
            location.

Method 2) a) Open the Printers Folder
          b) Select the "Add Printer" icon. This will launch the Printer
             Wizard.
          c) When prompted to select a manufacturer and product, select "Have
Disk" and insert DISK 1 from this package. You can then select
one of the printer drivers to install, or both MarkVision and the
printer drivers. If you select install MarkVision and the Printer
Drivers, you will be offered the Express/Custom/Server options as
             described in method 1 above.

Method 3) If the printer is locally attached to your workstation, you can let
Windows 95's Plug and Play mechanisms work for you to start up the
Printer Wizard automatically. Follow step c in method 2 above, to
          install MarkVision or printer drivers.

------------------

-------------------------------------
COMPATIBILITY AND SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
-------------------------------------

The SETUP Utility is designed and tested to operate on IBM (or 100%-
compatible) personal computers or personal systems with a hard drive.

All the utilities were designed and tested for the Microsoft Windows 95 System
Version 4.00.950 or greater.

System Requirements:

- To run SETUP, you need at least 1.5 MB of free hard disk space.
This disk space will be freed when SETUP is complete.

- To install the Lexmark PostScript driver, you need approximately 1 megabyte
  of PC hard disk space.

- To install the Lexmark PCL 5 driver, you need approximately 1 megabyte of PC
  hard disk space.

- To install MarkVision for Windows 95, requires approximately 4 MB of
  PC hard disk space.

In order to manage a locally parallel attached printer to a workstation
(including Peer-to-Peer local parallel attached printers) using MarkVision,
the workstation must have an IEEE 1284 compliant parallel port controller and
parallel cable.

---------------------------
NETWORK SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

configuring, and installing your MarkNet adapter with MarkVision.

-----------------------------
USER TIPS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
-----------------------------

- EXPRESS VS. CUSTOM VS. SERVER SETUP

The Express Installation method in SETUP should be selected for printers
that will be connected directly to a PC through a parallel (LPT) port. This
includes accessing a remote printer that is shared (Peer-to-Peer), yet is
connected to a workstation through a parallel port. In addition, any
printer drivers that are installed are installed directly onto the
  workstation running SETUP.

The Custom Installation method in SETUP should be selected for printers that
are available by a Lexmark network adapter. Custom Installation allows the
user or administrator to select the network protocol that needs to be
installed to enable MarkVision function. You can also install printer
drivers and local LPT attached printer support.

The Server Installation method allows the network administrator to place all
the MarkVision and Driver files onto a shared network drive location for use
  in two ways:

  1) Allow users to run MarkVision from this remote location, thus minimizing
the amount of workstation hard drive space required to run MarkVision
     from a workstation.

- OR -

  2) Allow users to install MarkVision and Lexmark printer drivers to their
local workstation without using diskettes. This method makes local
installation of drivers and/or MarkVision as easy as an "email" note
informing users where to access the SETUP utility. The users can run
SETUP from their workstation without the need for the actual diskettes.

- MISSING PRINTERS IN MARKVISION

A "missing" printer (as listed in the "status" column of the details
display) is a printer that was listed in a previous MarkVision session, but
is not found on this session. The first time you start up MarkVision, you
will NOT find any "missing" printers. A "missing" printer had to be listed
at least once on a previous session of MarkVision.

A printer can be "missing" for several reasons:

  1) The most common reason is that the printer has been turned off. Once the
printer is turned back on, and MarkVision is either restarted or a
refresh operation is performed, the printer status changes from missing
to a known state: like "Ready."

  2) Another reason is that a printer has been replaced with a printer of
another manufacturer or type since MarkVision was last invoked.

Through the Configuration menu, you can elect not to show these missing
printers. Another way to delete missing printers is to select Delete from
the (usually Right Mouse Button) pop-up menu.

Note: When you individually delete missing printers from a MarkVision
printer window, you exit MarkVision to save this information.
Otherwise missing printers unexpectedly returnwhen the MarkVision
        screen is refreshed.

- PREPARING FOR A WINDOWS 95 MARKVISION INSTALL ON SYSTEMS THAT CONTAINED
  MARKVISION FOR WINDOWS 3.1

The MarkVision application written for Windows 3.1 was not designed to
run in the Windows 95 environment. For locally attached printers, it may
appear that MarkVision does indeed work. However, you will notice that
when MarkVision is running, you are unable to print, due to communications
port device conflicts. These conflicts are due to the LEX01.386 VxD that
is loaded. In addition, there are a variety of problems as well for
  network attached printers.

  To avoid this problem:

  - Remove the LEX01.386 and VPD.386 invocations from the SYSTEM.INI file.
(Delete the DEVICE=LEX01.386 and DEVICE=VPD.386 lines in the [386Enh]
section of the SYSTEM.INI file in the \WINDOWS subdirectory.

To free up some hard drive space:

  - From a DOS Prompt, DELTREE the subdirectory where you installed the
Windows 3.1 version of MarkVision. (For example: DELTREE C:\PRT4049).
You will find all the necessary functions that you had with the previous
version of MarkVision and Toolkit available with the new Windows 95
    utility.

- DOWNLOADING FONTS/MACROS/DEMOS DOES NOT SUPPORT UNC NAMES

When selecting paths and/or file names for fonts, macros, overlays, or demos
to download to printer FLASH or DISK, it is still necessary to use
conventional 8.3 directory and filename format. This function is shared
between the Lexmark printer drivers and MarkVision; so this restriction
applies regardless of where you access the download utility.

- LEXMARK 4079plus SUPPORT MISSING

In this release, MarkVision for Windows 95 does not support all the printers
that are supported by MarkVision for Windows 3.1. Please contact us
("Contacting Lexmark" in the MarkVision Help Contents) to ask about
  additional printer support.

- NETWORK QUEUE MANAGEMENT and ENHANCED RESOURCE MANAGEMENT MISSING

These are two functions that are not included in the MarkVision for
Windows 95 release that are available today with the Windows 3.1 version.
New functions will be frequently added in time. Please contact us to inquire
  about additional function support.

- INSTALLING LEXMARK PRINTER DRIVERS AFTER A SERVER INSTALLATION

When you perform a Server Installation, you not only copy all the MarkVision
files onto the server directory location that you specified, but you also
copy both the PCL and PostScript Lexmark Printer drivers to this same
location. For example, if you chose the server directory to be "X:\LEXMARK"
both MarkVision and the Lexmark printer drivers would be installed to this
  subdirectory.

When you are ready to install the printer drivers to your local PC, you need
to remember this network location of "X:\LEXMARK." The Printer Wizard will
  request this item.

The Lexmark Installation Program uses the Printer Wizard to install the
Lexmark printer drivers. Also, you can start the Printer Wizard manually by
selecting the "Add Printer" icon inside the Windows 95 Printers Folder. Be
sure to select the "Have Disk..." button when you are shown the list of
printer manufacturers and their printers from within the Printer Wizard.
The next dialog "Install From Disk", requires the "X:\LEXMARK" path. This
path contains the LEXMARK.INF file that the Printer Wizard needs to complete
the task of installation of the Lexmark printer drivers to your workstation.

---------------------
PROBLEM DETERMINATION
---------------------

- MARKVISION DOES NOT WORK FOR A SERIALLY CONNECTED PRINTER

MarkVision cannot establish bidirectional communications to a printer
connected to a serial port of your PC workstation. You need either to
attach your printer to the LPT port of your PC, or connect directly to
a LAN by means of a Lexmark Network Adapter.

- CANNOT PRINT TO THE LOCAL PRINTER WITH MARKVISION

There are several possibilities why when MarkVision is running, you will
not be able to print to a local, parallel port connected printer without
getting Windows Port Device Conflict messages:

  1) The Windows 95 Spooler Settings MUST be set to "Enable bidirectional
support for this LPT port." Click on the "Details" tab found in the
Property Sheet of the printer driver. Click "Spool Settings..." to check
the status of the "Enable bidirectional support for this printer" check
box. Be sure this setting is selected, or you will not be able to print
from a Windows application when MarkVision running.

  2) Also check the "Spool MS-DOS Print Jobs." This setting can be found by
selecting the "Port Settings..." button in the "Details" tab of the
printer driver's Property sheet. Be sure this setting is enabled in order
to allow printing from a DOS Prompt or DOS Application with MarkVision
     running at the same time.

  3) Port Conflicts can be caused if a Lexmark printer driver has never been
installed for this port AND you print through a non-Lexmark printer
driver. For example, you installed MarkVision to manage your local
printer, but you use non-Lexmark printer drivers to print to this
printer. Even if you intend to print through a non-Lexmark printer
driver, you need to install at least one Lexmark printer drivers and
configure it for this same LPT port.

- LOCAL PRINTER APPEARS AS NON-BIDIRECTIONAL IN MARKVISION MAIN PRINTER WINDOW

Some common reasons for this problem:

  1) Your PC's Parallel Port needs to be configured as NORMAL or placed in
COMPATIBILITY mode in your PC's BIOS Setup. EXTENDED or other settings
such as this, generally do not work with the Windows 95 supplied LPT.VXD
     driver.

  2) Your Parallel Printer Cable is not an IEEE 1284 compliant cable.

  3) Your printer is attached to your PC through a switch box that allows for
sharing of your printer with other PCs. Frequently these switch boxes do
not "switch" all of the Centronics Parallel signals; therefore the
inherent bi-directional capabilities of the cable are lost.

  4) On some computers, the parallel port mode set to "Standard" will not
allow MarkVision to establish bidirectional communications. However, if
these computers have an ECP parallel port mode, change it to ECP mode and
     retry MarkVision.

  5) If you have a Lexmark WinWriter 150C or a Lexmark Color JetPrinter 1020
or a Lexmark Color JetPrinter 2070 printer driver set to output to the
same local LPT port that your 4039plus or Optra is attached to,
MarkVision will not be able to establish bidirectional communications
with that port. You will need to set the Lexmark InkJet printer driver
output port to FILE or another port.

- MARKVISION NOT FINDING ALL NETWORK PRINTERS THROUGH THE IPX CLIENT

If your computer has more than one network card active at the same time with
IPX being the only client, it is a known Windows 95 limitation that will
only allow MarkVision to find printers through only one of these network
  cards.

- SERVER INSTALLATION OF PRINTER DRIVERS FROM A LAN SERVER PC NOT WORKING

When the Printer Wizard is launched from SETUP, there is a known problem
in the Microsoft Printer Wizard that it cannot find the .INF or associated
printer driver files on a LAN SERVER remote drive. This is unique to
OS/2 LAN SERVER and is not a problem with any other network protocol.

- DOWNLOADED FONT, DEMO, OR MACRO GOES TO UNEXPECTED PRINTER
It is possible to associate more than one printer with a network queue,
so more than one printer appearing in MarkVision may be using the
same queue. When you select "Download" from the printer's popup menu
the font, demo, or macro is sent as a print job to the queue. The
first printer using the queue that finds this job will accept it.
This may not be the printer selected in MarkVision.

- OPTRA E SETTINGS PAGES DO NOT APPEAR IN PRINTER NOTEBOOK
The Font/Paper, Presentation, and Advanced settings property pages
will only appear in the printer notebook when the Optra E is
connected through a local port or through a redirected local port.
If the Optra E is connected only through a Lexmark TCP/IP or IPX
Logical Port or via Peer to Peer these pages will not be visible.
